PORTLAND, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- If wind power is going to play a key role in Maine's future, businesses want to know how they can cash in. Manufacturers, machinists, and the makers of boats and composites are gathered in Portland at a 3 day conference on wind power.
Dr. Habib Dagher of the University of Maine says now is the time to get in on the ground floor of a rising industry. Dagher says Maine is planning to build 3 gigawatts of land based wind power by 2020, that's a 7 billion dollar investment. 700 million of that is blades. Dagher asks, "Wouldn't it be wonderful if we could build those blades in maine?" The Wind Industry Seminar Series 2010, which began today at the Clarion hotel in Portland, is bringing people together to learn how they can get involved in the wind power industry. The conference is filled to capacity.
Dagher was also showing off plans for the huge new laboratory to be built at U. Maine with grant money that was just awarded on Friday. Dagher says at the new lab they will develop and test a new kind of wind turbine that will be able to withstand the powerful winds off the Maine coast.
